The present time is named for an information - oriented Society.
The information - oriented Society is coordinate conception with Civilized Society and named for Post Civilized Society or Post Industrial Society.
In the information - oriented society, various information is transmitted and exchanged.      Especially, the appearance of new - media changed the past unilateral, uniform style of communication.        It make possible that both - sides intersectional communication by individual of information.
But, we are  dependent  on newspaper, TV, radio in order to know news and judge the current events until now.     Newspaper provided people with various information through sentence in print, photo and illust.
TV  and  Radio transmit news by image and sound which are communication by electric wave.
In particular, since the 1950's ,the rapid popularization of TV have led  the era of more vivid and speedy communication,in place of past printing media.
Moreover, electric media including HDTV demanded the change of communication pattern.
Accordingly, it was expected that newspaper would be declined because of the competition between newspaper and TV.         But, it is newly recognized that newspaper (printing media) and TV (electric media) play the respective roles due  to their own characteristics.         Therefore,  it is required  that the content of newspaper - photo should be changed to coexist with video instead of coping with the effect of video including TV sounds.
newspaper - photo has provided many readers with various information rapidly, cheaply, for a long time as Halftone typography process which was deviced by Stephen H. Horgan in 1880, made a great opportunity to produce newspaper - photo massively.     Also, newspaper - photo has done its duties as history recorder or social speaker and persuaded reader.

Meanwhile, the  morderns who  live in  mass  culture want  to get a lot of information easily and economically.     Accordingly, the morderns are adopt to preper video media to logical and rational letter.
In this social condition, newspaper is on an changed trend from 'reading newspaper' to 'showing newspaper'.    The strong power of newspaper - photo was hard hit and degraded by TV.     So, it is demanded that to picturize of news events,to publish a pictorial of omnibus photo styles,to make colory photograph and to enlarge a photographic size.
Especially, as newspaper not only informs us of events but also criticizes and comments on current news, newspaper - photo is desired to be picturized.
Besides breaking  the news,  newspaper - photo offers information in order that many  readers can find truth  and judge the event through the reality analyzed by photo journalist.
Therefore, newspaper - photo is freed form its previous simple reporting function and fulfills its social function as an independent mass media.
